HOM Directors Heather and Melanie Atkinson with Filipino children-2010

Will you consider being one of our Partners?

Sadly, one of the great misunderstandings regarding relief efforts to third world countries is the notion that only those who go on the trip are important to the cause.  The reality is, that thought could not be farther from the truth.

Those who chose to join Hope on the Move as travelers are, indeed, a very important part of any humanitarian effort.  Because we are a not-for-profit entity, each traveler is responsible to generate their own support to pay for personal expenses (e.g., ground transportation to point of departure, air transportation to and from the project’s location, housing on the project site, food and local transportation, maintaining a passport and immunizations, etc). Being a traveling team member costs more than just money, it includes time, sacrifice in comforts, being away from friends & family, and more.

Over and above the costs incurred for individual travelers, Hope on the Move must generate funds for project costs related to each trip.  Examples of such efforts, both in terms of diversity and financial scope, would include:

  • Medications - $4,000 to $10,000 per trip.
  • Construction supplies - $ 5,000 and $15,000 per trip.
  • Medical equipment - $1,000 and $2,000 per trip. Note, on many occasions, we have chosen to leave items behind for others’ (including locals) to use after our departure, which necessitates us to purchase for each trip.
  • Sustaining Agriculture Project - $5,000. In 2009, under the supervision and initiative of board member, Rod Ingram, we piloted an agricultural project in Haiti involving the Moringa tree.  In short, this is a fast growing, highly nutritional tree well suited for growth and use in Haiti or other tropical regions.  This pilot program has been embraced with great enthusiasm by the local communities, so much so that Haitians are requesting more education for growing and using the Moringa tree in everyday life.
  • Dental - $2000 per trip. Historically, the dental care component focused on extractions of problematic teeth.  Last year, we piloted a project of applying sealants on healthy teeth in anticipation of aiding in long term improved dental health.  We envision continuing to broaden the scope of our dental offerings to include providing a broader education of dental hygiene to the local population that could include making available some basic dental items (e.g., toothbrush, tooth paste, floss, etc.) as well as the provision of sealants.

These are but a sampling of the projects Hope on the Move is involved with and we anticipate that the needs will not stop here.  However, with these descriptions, we hope the reader comes away with a clearer picture of how important financial donations are to the opportunities available for helping others.

Requesting support is, at least to us, awkward (i.e., our desire is that we would not be in such a position).  However, it is an opportunity to help others! In addition,we are often asked, ”How can I help…financially?”  If you feel motivated to join our endeavor by providing any financial gift (e.g., $10, $50, $100), you may do so by using the Pay Pal link below.  As a 501(c)3 organization, gifts to Hope on the Move are tax deductible in accordance with state and federal regulations.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
